Year 6 | Swim and Survive

Our Year 6 cohort recently participated in a comprehensive swimming and water safety initiative developed by the Royal Life Saving Association. The ‘Swim and Survive’ Program seeks to increase the swimming and water safety skills of all Australian children to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.

The inclusive and hands on program was conducted in the College pool and focused on developing skills through aquatic scenarios. One such scenario involved a rogue wave hitting the boat they were travelling in causing the students to fall overboard. The students needed to tread water and float, before performing a survival swim to safety and being rescued by a passing boat. Students also learnt the essential skill of entering and exiting the water while wearing a Portable Floatation Device (PFD).

Completion of the 'Swim and Survive' Program is a stepping stone for the Year 6 students to obtain the Active Award 5 Certificate later in the year.
