Year 3 | Indigenous Australian History and Culture

This term, the Year 3 cohort have been learning all about Indigenous Australian History and Culture during their Humanities lessons. The students discovered more about the traditional people of our local area, The Yugambeh People. We discovered how Aboriginal people have a deep spiritual connection to the land and would only take from it what they needed. We inquired about traditional Aboriginal food, clothing and shelter and compared it to that of more modern times.

We really enjoyed visiting the Library to take a closer look at genuine Aboriginal tools and artifacts and to learn more about them. We also read and recreated Dream Time stories and found out that the Elders of a tribe would teach their children through such stories.

We enjoyed it when Ms McQueen came into our class to teach us more about the meaning of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags and the traditional roles of Aboriginal tribe members. A real highlight of the unit was taking a trip to the Year 6 area with Ms McQueen and admiring the wonderful Aboriginal artwork on the buddy bench there. It was really interesting to learn about how the school’s history and humble beginnings had been represented so thoughtfully through Aboriginal art.
