Each year, Secondary students studying Economics, Accounting and Business enjoy the opportunity to participate in the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Sharemarket Game. The 2022 competition saw several students from Year 7, 8 and 10 celebrating their success after placing in the top 100 across the state.
Participating in the game provides students with hands-on knowledge of the sharemarket and experience in buying and selling shares. Students are able to test their investment strategies and enjoy friendly competition with their peers.
Year 10 students, Austin Barrett and Asim Sehovic, who participated in this year’s game, were eager to share their experiences:
“It surprised me how much things change and how easily shares go up and down. It was great to learn how the Sharemarket works, and it was interesting to learn about different companies,” Asim said.
Austin also added, “the game has taught me to research, to be patient and not to panic.”
With the opportunity to learn real-life skills and how the economy operates, the game also highlights to students the dangers of losing money if you do not manage your portfolio sensibly. Rivermount College Economics and Business teacher, Mary Helbig shared, “A large number of Australians have invested in the share market and it is likely to be one of the things that many of our student graduates will do at some stage in their lives, so it is a good way to show them how, but also to alert them to the pitfalls."
